I recently had an enquiry from Ray Smyth about Greenbank's Dairy - Ray's father used to work for them as a driver. Here's what I've been able to discover:

Richard Greenbank (1846–1920) married Elizabeth Burton (1848-1904) in 1870.
Children: Elizabeth (b.1870); Mabel (1870-1952); William (1875-1955); Margaret Ellen (b.1876); Robert (1879-1885); and, Agnes (b.1883).
1881 – Farmer of 43 acres near Nateby.
1891 – 1/2 Carisbrooke Place, Liverpool. Cowkeeper.
1901 – Milk House, Bedford Road, Liverpool. Cowkeeper.
1911 – 36 Bedford Road, Liverpool. Cowkeeper and Milk Dealer.
Following Richard’s death (1920), the Bedford Road dairy was subsequently run by Mrs Lucy Ann Burns (1955 + 1964).

William Greenbank (1875-1955). Son of Richard. Born in Dent, died in Liverpool. William lived at home working with his father until he married Lucy Millward in 1905.
Children: Richard (1904-1904); Elizabeth Mary (1906-1974); William (1910-1974); Ivy (1914-1955); Richard Stanley (1915-1997); and Alan (b.1919).
1911 census – 72 Walton Village, Liverpool. Cowkeeper.

Any other information would be gratefully received. Ta. Dave.

My father was a farmer in Hebden. I now live in Western Australia. Received a letter about your lecture in Grassington. I wish I could have been there. On of my treasured books is "Uphill to Paradise" written by David Joy.

Hello Raymond. It's lovely to hear from a member of the Bowdin family. As I described in my talk at the Festival, the Bowdins and the Joys are inextricably linked following six inter-family marriages during the early 1800s.

For the Festival I was billed as 'Dave Joy of Liverpool' so as not to be confused with my 4th-cousin-once-removed, David Joy of Hebden. David is a prolific writer and has been at it much longer than me. He is descended from the Joy farmers who remained in the dales, whereas I am descended from those who decided to relocate to Liverpool to become cowkeepers.

David and his wife attended my talk and we are arranging a visit to Hole Bottom next month. I am very much looking forward to seeing the places so lovingly described in David's book, 'Uphill to Paradise'.

From which line of the Bowdin family are you descended?

Thanks again for getting in touch. Dave.

I worked at 36 Bedford Road when it was Sam Leech Auto Repairs in 1977.
The repair shop and paint shop was formerly where the cows were kept apparently

Hi Gary,

Looks like the building is still there today - according to StreetView. And that repair/paint shop building certainly looks the part of a former shippon.
