I've a table booked at the World Heritage Big Weekend event being held in St Georges Hall, Liverpool on 29th - 30th April.  Will be there selling/signing books but hopefully will have time to attend one or two of the talks. If you are there too, come over and say hello. Dave.

Hi there,

I'm coming up to Liverpool tomorrow from Warwick, partly because I want to find out more about what my grandmother did in the depression years and afterwards and how she managed it. I'm going to have a rummage in the library - but it looks like you're way ahead of me. She brought cattle from the family farm near Goosnargh, near Preston to, I believe, Alt Street in Liverpool - but everyone who remembers is dead! She brought at least 4 of her 9 children with her, leaving the others with their father on the failing farm. They delivered milk in a pony and trap, and made ice cream, butter and cheese (I think!) The name of the dairy would have been Edelstons. Apparently people thought they put eggs in their ice cream as it was so yellow, but the didn't. My mum remembered the hard work of churning it.

Would be great to hear from you, especially if you know any more. Alt Street doesn't look right to me!

All the best,

Meg Harper (no relation to the Harper dairy, I think!)

Hi Meg,

Lovely to hear from you. I believe I've found your grandmother in the Kelly's 1938 Directory of Liverpool (which I haven't had time to transcribe and post on my website - yet!).

The entry is as follows: Edelston Mrs Eliz. 138 Alt Street

I hope that helps.

Dave.
