Having now trawled through the census records and a fair few directories to identify and list Liverpool's cowkeepers and dairymen, I thought I'd have a go at placing some of that information onto a street map to show both the location and the distribution of the city's dairies. So, I'm having a dabble with Google's My Maps.
Simply because it's the shortest of my lists, for my first attempt I've used the 1974 Directory. By then, just about all of the dairies had lost their cows and were just retailers of milk — the known exception being Capstick's dairy in Marlborough Road, which kept its cows until the summer of 1975. I've then added the 1891 census data; there are nearly 600 addresses in that list!
So, below is my starter for ten, but I'll try to add additional layers to show how the number and distribution of cowkeeping (cow symbol) and non-cowkeeping (milk bottle symbol) dairies changed over the decades. Have a play with it and let me know what you think. You can zoom in and out and click on the markers for address and ownership information. You can also switch between 1974 and 1891 or superimpose one on top of the other if you are so inclined!
Of course not all of the addresses exist today. Many of the inner-city dairies were lost either to WWII bombings or to later slum clearance and remodelling. There are a couple of websites I find extremely useful for locating the position of former streets and properties thereon:
www.historic-liverpool.co.uk/interactive-maps/
www.justme.org.uk/code/streets.html
www.maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/
Enjoy!
