At yesterday's talk in Bebington, someone mentioned a cowkeeper with the surname 'Braun' who had a dairy and possibly kept cows somewhere near Central Station in Liverpool. I have been unable to find any record so far. Thanks to the Townswomen's Guild for their hospitality.
An interesting afternoon at St Josephs Church Centre giving a talk to the U3A group. As the main room was being used for a funeral, I gave the talk in the rear bar. I think I just about managed to make myself heard above the disco next door! Anyway, the History Group seemed to enjoy the talk very much. One member of the group shared her memories of living near a dairy in Deysbrook Lane.
Had an enjoyable evening at Roby House last night hearing memories of Lambert's Dairy in Boaler Street and David Atherton delivering milk in the Huyton area. One member of the audience was a former resident of Monkfield Way in Garston and recollected the milk being delivered by the Joy family in a horse and cart.
Lovely evening at Whitworth Museum last night. What a place! Crammed to the rafters with every kind of local memorabilia, artefacts, heirlooms and antiques. It was particularly nice chatting to retired members of the local farming/dairy trade after my talk. Many thanks to the Whitworth Historical Society for their hospitality.
New book - Liverpool Cowkeepers - is out now. If anyone would like to purchase a signed/dedicated copy, just send me an email (david.joy1@tesco.net) as I've my own stock. Also, my 2016/17 programme of talks is off to a great start with a couple of dates on the Wirral. Check out the events tab on the left to see if I'm at a venue near you.
My new book - Liverpool Cowkeepers - is on schedule to be published on 15th September. I'm just proofreading the typeset draft at the moment and it's looking good. Unfortunately, there won't be room for the appendices listing the cowkeepers recorded in the 1881 and 1911 censuses. So, I might post them separately on this website for information.
Finished off my 2015/16 events programme this month with talks at Huyton, Roby and Bromborough, bringing the total to 24 - received a lovely, warm and enthusiastic reception at venues across the north-west. Have 17 bookings so far for the 2016/17 season.
A splendid turnout last night (60+) at St Luke's Church Hall with many who had their own family connections with the Liverpool cowkeepers. Chatted to a descendant of the Swinbank family who originated from Swaledale. When I checked my records there was an Isabella Swinbank from Swaledale doing business as a cowkeeper in 1881 out of 64 Albion Street in Liverpool.
Great fun giving my illustrated talk to the Friends of Greasby Library - for the second time! Memories of Hogg's Dairy in Aigburth, Mason's cows being herded up Garston village to 2 McBride Street and someone searching for a cowkeeping ancestor with the surname Kendal who came from Sedbergh.
Had a lovely warm reception from Mersey Otters Women's Group at Mossley Hill Church Hall last night. There were people there who remembered Bateman's Dairy in Aigburth, Dugdale's Dairy in Grassendale and Harper's Dairy in Mossley Hill.
