M. Whitfield - cowkeeper

At a recent talk I spoke with Walter Whitfield. He told me that his father had been Matthew Whitfield who was a cowkeeper at 19 Browne Street, in Liverpool. Unfortunately, the dairy in Browne Street was bombed during the war, but the family relocated to Shropshire to farm there.

I also had a chat with Susan Sunderland and her family. Susan's mother used to work for Tom Parker, a hay and straw merchant located at the top of Smithdown Road, and she can recall the local cowkeepers (including the Hogg family) calling in to pay their bills.

Interesting as my wife is the great-grandniece of a Matthew Whitfield, b. 1856 in Dent, Yorkshire. He married Ann Woof, b. 1855 in Sedbergh where they married in 1855. They moved down to Liverpool by the time of the 1881 census. Matthew being a family name was the son of Matthew, b. about 1813 in Garsdale who married who married Hannah Shepherd. Matthew and Ann Woof also had a son Matthew, who was the 4th of 11 known children, b. 1883 approx. from the 1891 census in Liverpool. The Whitfield tree is not one I have seriously investigated as the Woof family are our ancestors. Any relation??

Matthew and Hannah Whitfield are my great great grandparents.I know that Richard Whitfield and Dorothy Capstick were Matthew's parents but I have hit a brickwall when it comes to finding Richard's parents in Dent or nearby Ravenstonedale. To trace Dorothy is much easier as the Capstick family were a much larger family.I wonder if you have had any luck
Many thanks
Gill

My nan was Bessie Whitfield. Came from family in Dent. Were cow keepers in Liverpool. Met my grandad James Sherlock and lived in Molyneux Road in Kensington. Been to Dent with my Dad and he reckons she is a relative of Mathew Whitfield mentioned in your blog

Paul,

Do you have any dates? Birth/death/marriage for either Bessie or James? Was James also a dairyman/cowkeeper?

Dave.

I will get them for you. James wasn't a cow keeper. We believe Mathew Whitfield to be our great or great great grandfather. My cousin has more details as does my dad. Will come back to you
